The new USM Web site redesign and content management system conversion is a major project and involves changes that impact all of us, resulting in a new model of how we do business on the Web. The content management system will give everyone greater access and flexibility to make changes and keep content up to date, but it also involves some adaptation to consistent formats and structures. These were designed as part of a two, year-long information architecture redesign that was completed last December, and allowed broad opportunities for input.

The project schedule has been adjusted and updated to reflect the current progress in reviewing deliverables from Greater Good Marketing/Fuseideas and the progress in content migration meetings.

This page provides answers to frequently asked questions about USM's Web Content Management System.

What is a Web Content Management System (Web CMS)?

A Web Content Management System, or CMS, is web browser-based software to post and maintain the content of your website. The software all runs on the University's web server so there is no software for you to install on your workstation. It includes simple to use content editing tools, similar to Microsoft Word. It allows text formatting, links, pictures, media, etc. to be included in your web content.

On Thursday, February 10th, 2011, Fuseideas/Swardlick Marketing met with the Web Executive Committee and approved an initial design for USM's next generation home page. The approved version will be revised to incorporate comments and suggestions as a result of the meeting.

In fall 2009, Drupal, an open-source content management system was selected and technical and architecture teams were established. The technical team has been working to prepare the server(s) and software that will become the final product. There are many options and modules that can be added to Drupal, which provide the features and capabilities the university needs for its large and complex web presence.

Dynamic Diagrams delivered the Final Information Architecture Wireframe to USM on January 26, 2011. This final wireframe provides the framework from which the visual redesign of the USM Web site will be created by the Swardlick/Fuseideas team.
