During their senior year, Women and Gender Studies majors are required either to do a one-semester (4 or 6 credit) internship with a community partner or to write a thesis. Internship placements are secured in the fall of a student's senior year and conducted during spring semester. Recent internships have included such organizations as Planned Parenthood of Northern New England, The Maine Women's Lobby, The Maine Women's Fund, Equality Maine, Family Crisis Services, The Frannie Peabody Center, Sexual Assault Response Services, Maine People's Alliance, The Art Department and Literacy Volunteers of Maine. For more information on internships, please contact the Women and Gender Studies office at (207) 780-4289 or WGS@usm.maine.edu to set up an appointment with the director.
The thesis requires a minimum length of 30 pages plus bibliography on a topic approved by the committee and Director. Students must receive permission from the Director to register for the thesis. They must consult with the Director in advance of registration on the process of forming a committee and defining a topic.
