Heidi DeHaan Named to All-Little East Conference Second Team
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior forward Heidi DeHaan (Lewiston, Maine/St.
Dominic) of the University of Southern Maine women's soccer team was among the
24 players named today to the All-Little East Conference Women's Soccer team.
The conference office announced that DeHaan was named to the second team
following a vote by the conference's head coaches.
Southern Maine's leading scorer this past season, DeHaan netted seven
goals, including three game-winning goals, and was credited with two assists for
16 points. Her three game-winning goals tied for third most in the conference.
This is DeHaan's first all-conference recognition.
Twice during the 2009 campaign, DeHaan was chosen as the conference's
Offensive Player of the Week. She picked up her initial weekly citation on
October 5 for her efforts in USM's first conference victory since 2007, a 3-2
win over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. DeHaan collected her second
weekly honor on October 26 after helping the Huskies defeat Framingham State
College and Rhode Island College. DeHaan had the game-winning goal in both
matches.
"I'm very pleased that (DeHaan) has been recognized by the conference
coaches," commented head coach Lisa Petruccelli. "(DeHaan) has worked extremely
hard to develop her game. She used her physical attributes to her advantage and
was very successful at helping create offensive opportunities."
The Huskies finished the season 4-15-0 overall and 2-5-0 in the conference.
They were the fifth seed in the conference tournament.

DeHaan Named LEC Offensive Player of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- For the second time this season, University of Southern
Maine junior midfielder Heidi DeHaan (Lewiston, Maine) has been selected the
Offensive Player of the Week by the Little East Conference. The conference
office announced the award Monday afternoon.
DeHaan was honored for her efforts in the Huskies' wins over Framingham
State College and LEC rival Rhode Island College. DeHaan previously had been
recognized as the conference Offensive Player of the Week on October 5.
In USM's 3-2, double-overtime victory over Framingham State, DeHaan scored
two goals, including the game-winning goal in the opening minute of the second,
sudden-death period. Her first goal in the 28th minute had put USM ahead 2-1 at
the time.
Against Rhode Island College, DeHaan snapped a scoreless stalemate in the
81st minute with a left-footed strike that proved to be the only goal of the
match.
The three goals vaulted DeHaan to the top of the Huskies' scoring list.
She now has a career-best seven goals, including three game winners, and an
assist for 15 points.
Southern Maine, 4-12-0 overall and 2-4-0 in the Little East (tied for 5th),

Southern Maine Blanks Rhode Island College 1-0
PORTLAND, Maine -- Junior midfielder Heidi DeHaan (Lewiston, Maine)
scored the only goal and senior goalkeeper Alison Bradley (Auckland, New
Zealand) made three saves as the University of Southern Maine shut out Rhode
Island College, 1-0, in a Little East Conference women's soccer match Sunday

overall and 2-4-0 in the conference. The Anchorwomen dropped their fourth
consecutive match to slide to 2-11-0 overall and 1-5-0 in LEC play.
DeHaan struck a bouncing ball and put a 12-yard shot inside the far post
past RIC junior goalkeeper Maddie Pirri (Bristol, R.I.). Senior Samantha
Mathieu (Belfast, Maine) took a throw-in from the right sideline that bounced by

shot. The goal was DeHaan's team-leading seventh of the season, and her second
game-winning goal this week. She had the game winner against Framingham State
College in double overtime on Tuesday.
Bradley had to come up big moments after DeHaan's goal when a long ball out
of the back caught the USM back-line flat footed. Senior Christina Tavana
(Middletown, Conn.) went in alone on Bradley, but her low drive was stopped by
Bradley and cleared from danger by the Huskies defense.
Pirri played well in a losing effort making eight saves. Southern Maine

DeHaan scored the game-tying goal and assisted on the game winner in the
final six minutes of regulation time to help the Huskies post a 3-2 victory over
the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. The win was the Huskies first
against an LEC opponent since October 2007 and snapped a four-game losing
streak.
Only seconds after UMass Dartmouth had taken a 2-1 lead, DeHaan took the
ball along the left side, beat a defender and put a well-placed 15-yard shot
past the UMD goalkeeper to tie the game. Less than two minutes later, DeHaan
chased down a loose ball at the end line and crossed it across the goalmouth
where freshman Catherine Wise (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cheverus) directed it into
the goal for a 3-2 lead.
In 10 matches this season, DeHaan has scored three goals and picked up one
assist for seven points. This is the first time in her three-year career at USM
that DeHaan has received a weekly citation from the Little East.
The Huskies (2-8-0) travel to Lewiston, Maine, on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.) to
play at Bates College.

Southern Maine Overcomes UMass Dartmouth 3-2
PORTLAND, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine women's soccer team
scored two goals in a span of 1:28 late in the match and went on to defeat the
University of Massachusetts Dartmouth 3-2 in a Little East Conference encounter
Saturday afternoon at Memorial Field.
The victory snapped a four-match losing skid for the Huskies who improve to
2-8-0 overall and 1-2-0 in the conference. The Corsairs, winless in their last
four outings (0-3-1), fall to 4-6-1 overall and 1-2-0 in LEC play. The game was
originally scheduled to be played in Gorham, but was moved onto the turf at
Memorial Field due to the weather.
With the match appearing like it was headed for overtime, the two sides
combined for three goals in the final six minutes. UMD took its only lead in
the match on a restart as freshman Shannon Rhinehart (Randolph, Mass.) lifted a
long shot into from just outside the 18-yard area into the box where it bounced
off a USM player into the goal.
The lead was short-lived as junior Heidi DeHaan (Lewiston, Maine) got the
ball along the left-wing side, made a nice move past a UMD defender and beat
junior goalkeeper Tanya Braga (Hudson, Mass.) with a 15-yard shot to tie the
match. The goal came only 24 seconds after Rhinehart's tally.
DeHaan set up what proved to be the game-winning goal chasing down a loose
ball along the end line and crossing it in front of the net where freshman
Catherine Wise (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cheverus) redirected it into the goal.
The Huskies had to survive a final scare as the Corsairs got a good scoring
chance in the final seconds, but senior goalkeeper Alison Bradley (Auckland, New
Zealand) made a reflex save with her left hand to preserve the win.
Junior Danielle Poulin (Readfield, Maine/Maranacook) gave USM a 1-0 lead in
the opening seconds as her skipping shot found its way past Braga. Freshman Amy
Carchedi (Quincy, Mass) tied the match for UMD in the 59th minute converting a
cross from junior Cristal Peixoto (Dartmouth, Mass.).
Bradley finished the match with four saves. Braga, who played the first
half and returned to the match with 20 minutes to play after freshman Jen Warren
(Somerset, Mass.) came off with an injury, had two saves. Warren was credited
with one save in 25 minutes.
