Why join USM Tri-Beta?

Beta Beta Beta

#1) The offical crest (above) is wicked cool:

The motto on the crest, BLEPEIN BASION BIOU, means "to see the foundation of life."  The crest shows the acorn, the bird, and the fish, representing life on the ground, in the air and in the water. The knight's helmet signifies that the scientist is always ready to apply her abilities for the benefit of mankind. The skull reminds us that science, although greater than the life of any individual, depends upon the contributions of individual scholars. The two light quarters of the shield represent truth known to us; the dark quarters represent truth still unknown. The diagonal golden band symbolizes the light and truths of science. The serpent stands for wisdom. The colors of the Society are red and green: Blood red for zoology and leaf green for botany. The flower is the red rose, symbol of beauty and strength.

#2) You can get a lifetime membership that will look great on your resume and applications:

Regular membership ($45 for a lifetime membership) is open to students who meet the following criteria:
Good academic standing,
Have completed at least one semester of their sophomore year
Have completed at least 12 credits in biology with an average grade of B or better (>3.0).
Regular membership comes with privileges, such as the right to run for chapter office (there are potentially five positions: President, VP, Secretary, Treasurer, and Historian/Webmaster), and the right to wear honors cords at graduation.

Associate membership ($35 for a membership that expires upon graduation) is open to any undergraduate with an interest in the life sciences. Students who later meet the criteria for Regular Membership may choose to be promoted for the difference in fees ($10).

Although Tri-Beta has been as USM for many years, in recent years the membership has been low. We definitely welcome new members and are looking forward to future growth and diversity. If you’re interested, please send an email to the faculty advisor, Dave Champlin, champlin@maine.edu.

Anyone can take part in Tri-Beta activities!
