Elizabeth Higgins has been involved with academic advising for over 20 years with prior experience in summer session, financial aid and student development.  Currently she is the Interim Director of Academic Advising at the University of Southern Maine.  In this role she is directly responsible for the institution’s dual advising program as well as retention and persistence initiatives.  Beth also has managerial oversight for the Disabilities Services Center, Learning Assistance within Learning Commons and Veterans Services.  Beth teaches the Foundations of Academic Advising course at USM and is a faculty member for the NACADA Advising Assessment Institute.

Beth has been active in national advising association (NACADA) at the regional and national levels. She has served as a NACADA Board of Directors member, Chair of the Commission for Undecided and Exploratory Students and has been a member of the Commission and Interest Group Steering Committee.  Beth has facilitated national and regional presentations and has been the regional conference co-chair, evaluation chair, volunteer chair, Maine State Coordinator and an investigator for a student persistence and success grant.  Beth has contributed to the NACADA Clearinghouse of Academic Advising Resources and the 2011 NACADA Advising Administration Monograph.  In 2007, she received the NACADA Academic Advising Administrator Outstanding Advising Award.

Beth Higgins received her B.S. in Business Administration, her M.S. in Adult Education from the USM, and her Ed.D. in Education with a Higher Education Administration concentration from Northeastern University.  Her research focused upon the faculty advisor and student advising relationship.  Beth is also a Reiki Master, Global Career Development Facilitator, LEAN Continuous Improvement Practitioner, and holds certificates in Mediation and MBTI Step I and II. 

Beth and Dan Higgins have been married for almost 20 years.  In addition to spending time with their large extended family, they enjoy sharing time exploring the beautiful Maine beaches and forest lands.
