Job Description:

As the Director of Adult Education Kayla hires and trains new employees as well as provides evaluations and opportunity for professional development to current employees. She also oversees program tasks such as their annual program budget, writes federal and state grants, meets state and local reporting deadlines and manages data collection. When she’s not performing office duties she supervises the following programs; Adult Basic Education,High School Completion, HiSETPreparation and Testing, Workforce Training and Retraining, General Enrichment programming, and College Transitions.

Pathway:

Kayla’s journey began at William Drake when she took a course on “How to Teach Adults.” She loved the course and the field of adult education so much that once she completed her Bachelor’s degree she decided to pursue her Master’s degree in the Adult and Higher Education program at USM.

Experience in the Adult and Higher Education program:

Kayla’s very passionate about adult education and a term she lives by is, “Education is life!” She realized in the beginning of her graduate journey that she needed to slow down and stop running towards the finish line because in adult education there is no finish line. Kayla said, “I had been so focused on completing my education that I didn’t realize that I needed to slow down and soak up everything. There is no such thing as completing my education.” One of her favorite courses was Facilitating Adult Learning because she learned the importance of listening and responding. Kayla also said, “I never would have imagined I would have grown so much as both an educator and as a learner.” By following her passion, she landed a job promptly after completing her graduate degree that she truly loves.
