The Advising Process

Special Note for Newly Admitted Students: All new degree-seeking USM students are required to attend a 90-minute one-on-one Advising and Course Selection (ACS) Appointment. Information about how to schedule your ACS is emailed to your @Maine.edu email account 1 business day after their Enrollment Deposit is processed. For more information, please review usm.maine.edu/orientation/start or email usm.orientation@maine.edu

Current Students:
Your faculty and professional advisors will be working with you from the time you first enroll until you graduate.  Course selection, although important, is only a small part of your advising experience.  An advisor’s primary goal is assisting you to identify and achieve your educational, personal, and career goals.

We will help you to develop as a self-directed learner, explore resources, and understand and follow the advising and registration processes. We'll help you become an active participant in the advising relationship, be informed as you transition through your major, and understand the relationship between your academic major and career interests.

Advising at USM is very different than the experience you had in high school and can be different from your previous college experience.  Advising is a partnership of learning, exploring, and achieving.
