- Types of Appointments and How to Schedule an Advising Appointment -
Have a quick question? See our walk-in Counselor On Duty (COD) These meetings are typically 5 – 15 minutes in length for quick questions. For more complex issues please set up a 30 minute appointment with your assigned professional or faculty advisor. The AOD is available on a drop in basis weekdays from 10am – 4pm and a few evenings from 4pm-6pm except during break periods in all locations. Please see our Locations & Hours for the evening hours for each campus. No appointment is necessary.
1st Appointment – A meeting for our new advisees, in the first semester of attendance, typically scheduled within the first month of the semester to discuss the roles of advisors (faculty vs. professional academic), MaineStreet, the Core curriculum, Advising tools & resources, obtaining a Strengths code, and the value of creating a graduation plan. Not available during the Priority Registration period. Plan Ahead!
Academic Recovery – Students who are on academic probation are automatically put on an Academic Recovery Contract. Students are expected to schedule and keep 3 - 4 meetings per semester with their Academic Advisor. We have many resources as well as study strategies and opportunities available to enhance your academic success throughout your time here at USM. We are here to help!
General – 30 minutes – This is a meeting with your assigned professional advisor to discuss quick questions, change of major or minor, prior approval forms, study abroad applications or strategize about study skills. Not available during the Priority Registration period.
Priority Registration – 30 minutes – These meetings take place from mid-March to the end of April and again from the middle of October until the end of November to get your PIN (personal identification number) which is a code required to allow you to register for the upcoming semester. Students should prepare a Wish List.
- Students with 53 or less completed credits meet with their professional advisor for this appointment and to obtain their PIN. Undeclared and GO students meet with their professional advisor.
- Students with 54 or more completed credits meet with their faculty advisor for this appointment and to obtain their PIN. Not assigned? Contact your major department and asked to be assigned. You may even be able to request a faculty member in your major.
Strengths Interpretation – 30 minutes – This is a meeting that takes place after you have completed the Strengths Finder assessment. If you do not have a code to complete this assessment speak to your professional advisor or Community Engagement & Career Development for more information. Not available during the Priority Registration period.
