Duncan was a full-time Professor at the University of Southern Maine for thirty eight years where he instructed Sculpture and Design. He started the Sculpture program and developed the related studios. Students in this concentration have become outstanding Artists, Professors, Teachers, and have flourished in both related and unrelated fields. For example a former student, Kaitlyn Hunter, appeared in SCULPTURE magazine - chosen as one of the most outstanding Sculpture students in the country. Duncan Hewitt served as the Department of Art chair person for four years. In the Spring of 2016 he had a solo exhibition of his work at the Portland Museum of Art. This exhibition was the outgrowth of a continuous and passionate development of his art. In recent years his work has been shown with outstanding regional, national, and international artists.
