Art Education Program Highlights

ACCREDITED PROGRAM - USM is the only university in New England to offer an accredited degree in Community Art Education, preparing you to become a leader in the growing field of community-based art education, locally and globally.

REAL WORLD EXPERIENCE - You'll complete an internship in one of our K-12 districts across the state, or in a community art program in one of USM's Art Education's fifteen partner organization.  And you'll graduate with a K-12 teacher certification in Maine or a Community Arts endorsement with all the teaching experience you need for professional success.

COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS - USM Art Education faculty and students run the ArtLab program, a series of Saturday art classes with area youth.  ArtLab provides Art Education students with practices in writing curriculum and teaching art classes to children ages 8-16.

FOCUS YOUR STUDIES - You'll take a rigorous schedule of diverse studio courses with the option of concentrating in Ceramics, Painting and Drawing, Photography and Digital Art & Design, or Sculpture.

Studio Art & Art History Program Highlights

FOCUS YOUR STUDIES - You may choose from studio concentrations in Ceramics, Painting and Drawing, Photography and Digital Art & Design, and Sculpture, or major in Art History.  You may also add a minor in Book ArtsArt History, Studio Art, or Digital Media & Design to complement your studies.  All our degree programs offer low student-teacher ratios, mentorship, and peer learning, emphasizing your ability to think creatively and independently to become informed visual artists and art historians.

REAL WORLD EXPERIENCE - You'll intern with local businesses, community art organizations, artists, workshops, studios, galleries, and museums, including Portland Museum of Art, SPACE Gallery, Victoria Mansion, Mayo Street Arts, Sea Bags, Portland Pottery, and PhoPa Gallery.

ACCLAIMED ARTISTS - USM ART Galleries regularly present the work of nationally acclaimed artists, such as Natasha Mayers, James Luna, Nina Katchadourian, and Muhsana Ali.

COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS - Faculty and students are deeply engaged with the local community, and you'll have many opportunities to develop and participate in art projects that address community and environmental issues.

EXPERTS ON CAMPUS - The Artist in Residence program and the Lecture Series in the Visual Arts bring prominent artists, scholars, and critics to campus every semester.  Recent guest artists include Traci Malloy, Astrid Bowlby, SIMPARCH, and Gideon Bok.
