Athletic coaching has both a minor and a certificate. The program is administered through the Department of Exercise, Health, and Sport Sciences in conjunction with USM Athletics. It is designed to prepare students for coaching at all levels. The curriculum includes an introduction to the organization and administration of athletics as well as practical work in assisting coaches in selected sports. Attention is also given to the prevention and care of the most common injuries occurring in athletic programs. The minor helps to prepare students to begin a career in coaching with a solid base of philosophy, sports-specific knowledge, and practical experiences. Students have the opportunity to learn first-hand from seasoned coaches and then move on to apply their knowledge through field experiences and internships with local programs. Students may also take courses as electives or as part of the certificate program.
