GORHAM, Maine -- University of Southern Maine freshman Ben Drummey (Biddeford, Maine) and senior Zachariah Hoyle (Sidney, Maine/Messalonskee) received weekly honors Monday (February 15) when the Little East Conference announced its first set of weekly honors for the 2021 indoor track and field season.
Drummey was a double winner collecting both the Field Athlete of the Week and the Rookie Field Athlete of the Week honors. Hoyle was the recipient of the Track Athlete of the Week citation for the third time in his career.
Making his collegiate debut at the Huskies’ dual meet with Husson University this past Saturday (February 13), Drummey set school and facility records en route to winning the pole vault. He broke the school indoor record established by Ron Helderman in 2015 when he soared over the bar at 5.03 meters (16-6) on his first attempt. On his next attempt with the bar set at 5.10 meters (16-8¾), Drummey cleared the height to break the facility record set in 2019 by Travis Snyder.
Competing indoors for the first time since March 2019, Hoyle was a double winner on the track. The 2019 indoor All-American in the 800 meters opened his day winning the mile with a time of four minutes, 36.96 seconds. He returned later in the day to take the top spot in the 600 meters with a time of 1:24.87.
Led by Drummey and Hoyle, Southern Maine won the meet 74-55. Only the teams top two finishers in each event were scored in the unique team-scoring format.
The Huskies are scheduled to be back in action this weekend at the Costello Sports Complex field house. The meet schedule and competing teams will be announced later this week. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, no spectators will be allowed.
