GORHAM, Maine – After an outstanding effort put forth by his student-athletes at the 2018 NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Championship Tournament, University of Southern Maine Huskies' wrestling head coach Mike Morin '10 was selected as the Northeast Regionals Tournament Coach of the Year by his peers.
In his third season with the Huskies, Morin directed Southern Maine to its highest finish in the NCAA Division III Regional tournament, placing fifth with a team score of 88 points. Along with the team finish, a program-best five Huskies wrestled their way into All-Region status, while two Southern Maine grapplers freshman Austin Shorey (Lebanon, Maine/Noble) and sophomore Peter Del Gallo (Gardiner, Maine) each earned a berth into the NCAA Division III National Championship this coming weekend, March 9-10, in Cleveland, Ohio.
"This honor really reflects upon the outstanding work and commitment by the student-athletes and the entire coaching staff," said Morin, a 2009, 2010 NCAA Division III All-American for the Huskies. "They've put in the work, made commitment and it has paid off."
After an outstanding career as a member of the Huskies' wrestling team, Morin, Southern Maine's first wrestling All-American and first wrestler to earn three consecutive bids to the NCAA Division III National Championship tournament, winning the New England regional championship three consecutive seasons from 2008 through 2010, joined the USM coaching staff and served an assistant coach for five seasons (2010-2015). In his final season as an assistant coach before assuming the role of head coach, Morin was named the 2015 New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Assistant Coach of the Year. READ MORE
