ORHAM, Maine – After a record setting season, three members of the University of Southern Maine Huskies' women's soccer team are earning post-season recognition from the Little East Conference (LEC). The 2018 LEC women's soccer major awards and all-conference selections were announced Tuesday following a vote of the league's nine head coaches.
Among the award winners, Southern Maine junior Ciera Berthiaume (Windham, Maine) and freshman Alexandria Allain (Carmel, Maine/Hermon) were selected to the All-LEC second team, while first-year head coach Seth Benjamin '01 was named the 2018 LEC Coach of the Year.
In his first season on the sidelines of Hannaford Field, Benjamin guided the Huskies to a 14-5-1 overall record, a school record for wins in a season, and a 5-3 mark in Little East Conference play. Just the second coach in USM program history (Steve Quinones, 2004) to earn LEC Coach of the Year honors, Benjamin led Southern Maine to a berth in the LEC semifinals after the fourth-seeded Huskies posted a first-round shutout victory (3-0) over the fifth-seed UMass Dartmouth, marking the program's first postseason win since 2005. In a remarkable turnaround from last season's 5-12 record, Benjamin's team is the first Huskies' women's soccer squad to qualify for the postseason tournament since 2013. READ MORE
