Artist's Books by Elizabeth Berkana '86

Elizabeth Berkana holds a BA in Art from the University of Southern Maine and an MA in Counseling Psychology from Antioch New England Graduate School.  At USM she concentrated on printmaking, design and art history. Further studies included photography, metalsmithing, jewelry design and book arts at USM, Maine College of Art, and Haystack Mountain School of Crafts.  She will soon add a Book Arts Minor to her original degree.

Photography, printmaking, sewing, and mixed media are my tools. Pattern, texture, layers, distortion, and reflection are my vocabulary. Exterior as well as interior configurations inform the content.  My many travel experiences have profoundly affected my view of the individual and the world around us.  Discovering book arts has allowed me to think, feel, play and investigate who I am, where I have been, and what I want to say.

“A painting is not a picture of an experience,” Mark Rothko once remarked; “it is an experience.”
