SUMMARY:OverUnder Artist Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Crewe Center for the Arts’s Blossom Arts Lab on October 15 at 6 pm for a conversation with exhibition artists Rachel Gloria Adams and Rachel Sperry alongside USM’s Director of Exhibitions and Outreach\, Kat Zagaria Buckley. The three will discuss the OverUnder artists’ respective practices\, themes in their work\, and the somatic aspects of creativity. Special attention will be paid to the role of domesticity in the exhibition\, as well as how Adams and Sperry both investigate everyday and familial life as source material. \n\nRachel Gloria Adams in her studio.\n\nRachel Gloria Adams is a multidisciplinary artist living in Portland\, Maine. Adams has developed a vibrant\, graphic pattern-based visual language filled with references to the natural world that possesses an heirloom quality. Her work takes form by way of quilting\, painting\, design\, and murals. Adams moved to Maine in 2005 to pursue her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Maine College of Art and Design. She has gone on to exhibit artwork at the Portland Museum of Art\, Center for Maine Contemporary Art\, Notch8 Gallery\, and Dowling Walsh. Her work has been acquired by the Portland Museum of Art\, Farnsworth Museum\, as well as private collections. She has attended residencies at Surfpoint\, Speedwell\, Pace House\, and is an Indigo Arts Alliance David C Driscoll Fellow. In addition to her studio practice\, Adams has been commissioned to create murals for businesses as well as institutions\, including the Children’s Museum of Portland\, Worcester Art Museum\, and Farnsworth Museum. \n\nArtist Rachel Sperry in her studio. Photo: Greta Rybus.\n\nRachel Sperry was born in New York City in 1989 and grew up throughout New England before settling in Portland\, Maine\, where she lives with two Karls (one her son\, the other her husband) and a dog named Jenny. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Printmaking from Washington University in St. Louis in 2013. In 2014\, Sperry founded her creative studio\, NUUFORM\, which has evolved over the years to encompass a wide-ranging practice including knitwear\, editorial commissions\, photography\, and studio-based work. Her work has been exhibited internationally in Italy and across the United States\, and has been featured in publications such as Mother Tongue\, The New York Times Opinion\, Cake Zine and Out of Eden’s.

DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Osher Youth Ensembles\, Portland’s outstanding regional youth music program performs twice a year at Merrill Auditorium. \nPortland Youth Wind Ensemble directed by Dr. Will Kinne\nPortland Young People’s String Consort directed by Linda Vaillancourt\nPortland Youth Junior Orchestra directed by Nathan Plourde\nPortland Youth Symphony Orchestra directed by Dr. Robert Lehmann \nOn March 22\, 1942\, the first rehearsal of the 65-member Student Philharmonic Orchestra\, was held at the Chestnut Street Church. That orchestra was created\, and conducted for 32 years\, by Clinton W. Graffam Jr.\, a Portland Symphony Orchestra oboist\, and whose father was one of the Portland Symphony Orchestra’s founders. The first concert by the Student Philharmonic was given on the following May 19 at Portland City Hall Auditorium before an audience of 1\,200. The concert was sponsored as a benefit for the War Service Department by the Maine Federation of Music Clubs. In place of an admission fee\, concert-goers donated sheet music and phonograph records\, which were to be distributed to members of the Armed Forces throughout Maine. \nThe orchestra eventually became known as the Junior Symphony\, then the Portland Symphony Youth Orchestra—a part of the PSO’s educational and community outreach. In 1979-80 two more youth groups were added to the program\, The Portland Youth Wind Ensemble and Portland Young People’s String Consort. In 1996-97 all three youth ensembles came under the administration of the School of Music of the University of Southern Maine (then called the Music Department). \nThe Osher School of Music is proud to carry on the tradition of offering high-quality performance opportunities for middle and high school students from around the region and is grateful to the parents\, schools\, and educators who help to make these opportunities possible.

SUMMARY:Masterclass with Jessica Chow Shinn & Michael Shinn
DESCRIPTION:The Osher School of Music and Portland Ovations are pleased to present a masterclass with pianists Jessica Chow Shinn and Michael Shinn.\n\n\n\n\nJessica Chow Shinn joined the Boston Conservatory at Berklee in 2018 and is an associate professor of collaborative piano. \nShe was a faculty member at the Juilliard School in the College and Evening divisions from 2012–2017. She is the cofounder and coartistic director of the pianoSonoma Music Festival\, which brings together artists in residence and adult musicians to collaborate and perform in private and public concerts and community workshops across the country. \nPassionate advocates of new music\, Shinn and her husband\, pianist and Conservatory Interim Executive Director Michael Shinn\, have given world premieres by composers such as Adam Schoenberg and Thomas Cabaniss. In April 2017\, they performed the world premiere of Double Rainbow\, a two-piano concerto by Cabaniss\, with the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra. Shinn’s other performing engagements have included recitals in Alice Tully Hall\, Weill Hall at the Green Music Center\, the Peter Jay Sharp Theater\, Trinity Church in Lower Manhattan\, Chapelle historique du Bon-Pasteur in Montréal\, and Salle Cortot in Paris. The Shinns have been invited to speak about the role of the arts in society and to perform at the Pebble Beach Authors and Ideas Festival. \nShinn’s interest in the integration of theater and song led to her appointment as music director of an innovative New York University production of Schumann’s Frauenliebe und -leben. \nShinn received her Doctor of Musical Arts at Juilliard\, where she studied with Margo Garrett\, Jonathan Feldman\, and Brian Zeger. She received her Master of Music from New England Conservatory of Music and her Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Arts from Oberlin College. She is a Yamaha artist. \n\n\n\nMichael Shinn\, DMA\, was appointed executive director of Boston Conservatory at Berklee in October 2024. In this role\, Shinn oversees strategy\, operations\, and artistic planning for the Conservatory and works closely with faculty members and administrators to develop a transformative curriculum that reflects an ever-evolving performing arts landscape. In addition\, Shinn represents Boston Conservatory and its interests\, both across the Berklee organization and in public arenas. \nShinn’s passion for educating creative and versatile performing artists of the future\, combined with his steadfast support for the outstanding faculty and students at Boston Conservatory\, have been foundational to his leadership. Prior to his appointment as executive director\, he served as both Boston Conservatory’s interim executive director (2023–2024) and as dean of music (2017–2023). In these roles\, Shinn led Boston Conservatory to several significant achievements. As interim executive director\, he oversaw strategic enrollment growth; raised philanthropic funding that exceeded the Conservatory’s annual goal by 40 percent; brought Krisha Marcano(Opens in a new window) onto the Conservatory’s leadership team as dean of theater; hired more than 30 new faculty members(Opens in a new window) across the school’s three divisions; rolled out new academic offerings for Conservatory students\, such as a minor in Africana studies(Opens in a new window); and deepened the Conservatory’s partnerships with learning environments across Berklee\, including Berklee Online and Berklee NYC. \nAs dean of music\, he led impactful innovations in the division’s academic and artistic programming\, including developing new vision and positioning statements. He also refined curriculum in support of Boston Conservatory’s Strategic Direction for 2020–2025(Opens in a new window)\, and established important partnerships with renowned organizations such as Silkroad Ensemble and Boston Lyric Opera (BLO). \nOne of Shinn’s chief goals as dean was to leverage the merger with Berklee for the benefit of the Conservatory as well as the entire institution. He brokered partnerships with Berklee Valencia\, both to launch the study abroad program for Music Division students and to support the Summer Opera Intensive there; with Berklee NYC to record ensembles from the Music Division in 8K virtual reality at their world-class Power Station studios; and with the College’s Screen Scoring Department for their students’ compositions to be recorded at Berklee NYC by ensembles from the Music Division. As a result of these initiatives\, Boston Conservatory students are now at the vanguard of their fields as artistic changemakers and leaders. \nShinn’s diverse career in music reflects his deep passion for performance\, education\, entrepreneurship\, and innovation in the arts. Prior to Boston Conservatory\, Shinn was chair of keyboard studies at The Juilliard School\, where he taught piano\, chamber music\, piano pedagogy\, and keyboard skills for both pianists and conductors. He also served as senior advisor for artistic and educational programs at Juilliard Global Ventures\, where he designed and taught Juilliard’s first online course\, Juilliard Piano Class: Sharpen Your Artistry. \nTogether with his wife\, Jessica (also a pianist and faculty member at the Conservatory)\, Shinn cofounded and directs the pianoSonoma(Opens in a new window) Music Festival\, which has been a major vehicle for supporting the development of the finest young musicians. \nShinn has designed innovative lectures and courses on a variety of subjects\, often focusing on his specialty\, the music of Franz Liszt. In 2011\, he was the artistic director of the Liszt Festival at Juilliard\, a series of lecture-recitals celebrating the composer’s bicentennial that brought together world-class artists and pedagogues. \nShinn and his wife are both Yamaha Artists and duo pianists who passionately advocate for new music\, having given world premieres by composers such as Adam Schoenberg and Thomas Cabaniss. They commissioned the latter to write a major two-piano concerto\, Double Rainbow\, that is the centerpiece of a recently released album featuring the complete repertoire that Cabaniss has written for the duo. \nShinn is also a loving father of two\, and when time permits he is a passionate runner\, cyclist\, and triathlete. \n\n\n\n\nMasterclasses free and open to the public.\n\n\nEvent Details\nParking\nDue to limited resources\, parking is not free on our Portland and Gorham campuses. SUMMARY:New York Voices & Portland Jazz Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by One Longfellow Square\, the Osher School of Music\, and the Portland Jazz Orchestra. \nThe New York Voices – soprano Kim Nazarian; alto Lauren Kinhan; baritone Peter Eldridge; and tenor\, saxophonist\, and musical director Darmon Meader – “The Four and Only\,” as the great Cuban saxophone and clarinet virtuoso Paquito D’Rivera once dubbed them\, have been one of the world’s elite jazz singing groups for 38 years. \nOver the years\, the New York Voices albums\, repertoire\, and concerts have evolved\, sometimes in surprising ways. The Voices embrace a diversity of styles\, from big band jazz to post-bop\, from Brazilian jazz to the singer-songwriter repertoire of Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder\, to their own tuneful originals. In the beginning\, their live shows featured a compact rhythm section\, and they had no plans to perform with big bands or symphony orchestras. That changed in the fall of 1994 when the group was invited to sing two songs with the Count Basie Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. \nThe Voices have multiple recordings with big bands and have developed a diverse and extensive library of arrangements that feature this sort of collaboration. For decades\, they have performed all over the world\, including concerts and tours with the WDR and SWR Big Bands in Germany\, the Metropole Orchestra in the Netherlands\, the USAF Airmen of Note\, Norway’s Trondheim Jazz Orchestra\, and many other notable orchestras\, including the Portland Jazz Orchestra. \nNow\, after nearly four decades of concerts\, world tours\, 11 landmark albums under their own name\, and high-profile collaborations with international jazz masters\, this Grammy Award winning group will be performing with the Portland Jazz Orchestra as part of their Grand Finale tour. If you have not had the pleasure of seeing the New York Voices perform with the Portland Jazz Orchestra\, this show will be your last chance as the Voices will be “hanging up their mics” at the completion of this 2026 tour. \n“We want to go out on a high note\,” said Darmon. “This band has taken us all over the world\, from intimate clubs\, to concert halls with big bands and symphony orchestras\, to international festivals where we’ve performed for thousands.  And it’s given us countless opportunities to work with many of the greatest names in jazz. In our final months as a group\, we’ll continue to travel the globe on our Grand Finale tour so that our fans will have one more chance to see and hear us live.” \nThe New York Voices and the Portland Jazz Orchestra will play one last show together. Please join them at the Westbrook Performing Arts Center\, 471 Stroudwater Street\, Westbrook\, ME 04092. 7:30 pm show. Tickets are available at: \nhttps://onelongfellowsquare.com/event/nyvoices-pjo/ \n  \nDoors open an hour before showtime.\nADVANCE PURCHASE: $20 (+ fees)\nADVANCE PURCHASE SENIORS + STUDENTS: $10 (+ fees)\nDAY OF SHOW: $25 (+ fees)\nDAY OF SHOW SENIORS + STUDENTS: $15 (+ fees)
