SUMMARY:POSTPONED - Cosmic Coda (Come back here for updates on a new date and time)
DESCRIPTION:How do you build a machine to test an idea—Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity—that’s beyond most people’s comprehension? And what does an astrophysicist actually do on a regular Tuesday while probing the depths of space? \nIn Cosmic Coda\, a naive grad student filmmaker asks these questions in 1985—then returns nearly 40 years later to continue the journey\, capturing one of the most profound scientific discoveries of our time as it happens. \nA special screening of the full documentary Cosmic Coda\, this program traces the story of LIGO and the landmark detection of gravitational waves. Together\, participants will be able to explore how our understanding of the universe — and the very nature of scientific discovery — has evolved across generations. \nThis screening of Cosmic Coda is presented to honor the life of MIT physicist Rainer Weiss.

SUMMARY:Treasures of the Universe
DESCRIPTION:Since ancient times people have observed distant clouds in the night sky. The invention of the telescope led to the discovery of many more nebulae in the 17th and 18th centuries. Later\, it was shown that many nebulae were actually distant galaxies. Thanks to modern instruments such as the Hubble Space Telescope\, we can see the beauty and wonder of the universe in great detail.

SUMMARY:THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION AND THE FATE OF THE WORLD
DESCRIPTION:An electrifying global history of a not-so local war.\n\nWhen we think of the American Revolution\, we often picture a parochial drama: thirteen colonies squaring off against the British Crown in a spirited bid for independence. But this version of the story is only half the truth—and perhaps not even the most interesting half. In this riveting program\, historian and author Richard Bell invites audiences to rediscover the Revolution as a world war that unleashed chaos\, opportunity\, and transformation across six continents. From the sugar fields of the Caribbean to the court of the King of Mysore\, from refugee camps on the Canadian frontier to political uprisings in Sierra Leone and Peru\, the war that gave birth to the United States was never simply America’s own. It was a seismic global event that redrew maps\, toppled hierarchies\, catalyzed migration\, and accelerated new movements for liberty—and for empire.\n\nIn this program\, Bell traces the far-flung reverberations of the war through the lives of the people it displaced\, empowered\, or destroyed. Participants will encounter a Native matriarch struggling to preserve a transatlantic military alliance\, a Prussian officer reinventing himself in a foreign army\, and a Boston schoolteacher shipwrecked thousands of miles from home. Along the way\, Bell explores how the Revolution stirred a transoceanic refugee crisis\, ignited antislavery activism\, and inspired uprisings from Ireland to India. The program offers a bold new framework for understanding the Revolutionary War not as a tidy founding moment but as a sprawling\, high-stakes struggle fought on land and sea\, shaped by commerce\, diplomacy\, propaganda\, and contingency. This is the American Revolution as you’ve never seen it before: complex\, global\, and astonishingly relevant to the modern world.\n\n\nDate: Thursday\, March 5th\, 2026 \nLocation: Hannaford Hall\, Abromson Center\, University of Southern Maine (Portland Campus) \nTime: 5:30 pm reception\, 6 pm lecture and 7:30 pm book signing. \nFree and open to the public [parking in garages or lots @$4.15/hour].

SUMMARY:All in the Timing\, Six One-Act Plays
DESCRIPTION:All in the Timing\, Six One-Act Plays\nBy David Ives\nDirected by Jared Mongeau \nFebruary 27-March 8\, 2026\nTony Shalhoub Black Box Theater\, Russell Hall\, USM Gorham Campus  \nEnjoy our first show in the newly renovated Tony Shalhoub Black Box Theater! All In The Timing’s six absurdist short plays explore the questions of what it is to be human and the relationships we have with each other on this strange journey of life. What are the odds that have led us to where we are at this moment? What is the cause and effect of our actions? Do we have free will? Winner of the John Gassner Playwriting Award\, this critically acclaimed\, award-winning evening of comedies explores these questions with wit\, intellect\, satire and a lot of fun. \n
