SUMMARY:Osher Youth Ensembles Concert
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Osher Youth Ensembles\, Portland’s outstanding regional youth music program performs twice a year at Merrill Auditorium. \nPortland Youth Wind Ensemble directed by Dr. Will Kinne\nPortland Young People’s String Consort directed by Linda Vaillancourt\nPortland Youth Junior Orchestra directed by Nathan Plourde\nPortland Youth Symphony Orchestra directed by Dr. Robert Lehmann \nOn March 22\, 1942\, the first rehearsal of the 65-member Student Philharmonic Orchestra\, was held at the Chestnut Street Church. That orchestra was created\, and conducted for 32 years\, by Clinton W. Graffam Jr.\, a Portland Symphony Orchestra oboist\, and whose father was one of the Portland Symphony Orchestra’s founders. The first concert by the Student Philharmonic was given on the following May 19 at Portland City Hall Auditorium before an audience of 1\,200. The concert was sponsored as a benefit for the War Service Department by the Maine Federation of Music Clubs. In place of an admission fee\, concert-goers donated sheet music and phonograph records\, which were to be distributed to members of the Armed Forces throughout Maine. \nThe orchestra eventually became known as the Junior Symphony\, then the Portland Symphony Youth Orchestra—a part of the PSO’s educational and community outreach. In 1979-80 two more youth groups were added to the program\, The Portland Youth Wind Ensemble and Portland Young People’s String Consort. In 1996-97 all three youth ensembles came under the administration of the School of Music of the University of Southern Maine (then called the Music Department). \nThe Osher School of Music is proud to carry on the tradition of offering high-quality performance opportunities for middle and high school students from around the region and is grateful to the parents\, schools\, and educators who help to make these opportunities possible.

DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by One Longfellow Square\, the Osher School of Music\, and the Portland Jazz Orchestra. \nThe New York Voices – soprano Kim Nazarian; alto Lauren Kinhan; baritone Peter Eldridge; and tenor\, saxophonist\, and musical director Darmon Meader – “The Four and Only\,” as the great Cuban saxophone and clarinet virtuoso Paquito D’Rivera once dubbed them\, have been one of the world’s elite jazz singing groups for 38 years. \nOver the years\, the New York Voices albums\, repertoire\, and concerts have evolved\, sometimes in surprising ways. The Voices embrace a diversity of styles\, from big band jazz to post-bop\, from Brazilian jazz to the singer-songwriter repertoire of Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder\, to their own tuneful originals. In the beginning\, their live shows featured a compact rhythm section\, and they had no plans to perform with big bands or symphony orchestras. That changed in the fall of 1994 when the group was invited to sing two songs with the Count Basie Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. \nThe Voices have multiple recordings with big bands and have developed a diverse and extensive library of arrangements that feature this sort of collaboration. For decades\, they have performed all over the world\, including concerts and tours with the WDR and SWR Big Bands in Germany\, the Metropole Orchestra in the Netherlands\, the USAF Airmen of Note\, Norway’s Trondheim Jazz Orchestra\, and many other notable orchestras\, including the Portland Jazz Orchestra. \nNow\, after nearly four decades of concerts\, world tours\, 11 landmark albums under their own name\, and high-profile collaborations with international jazz masters\, this Grammy Award winning group will be performing with the Portland Jazz Orchestra as part of their Grand Finale tour. If you have not had the pleasure of seeing the New York Voices perform with the Portland Jazz Orchestra\, this show will be your last chance as the Voices will be “hanging up their mics” at the completion of this 2026 tour. \n“We want to go out on a high note\,” said Darmon. “This band has taken us all over the world\, from intimate clubs\, to concert halls with big bands and symphony orchestras\, to international festivals where we’ve performed for thousands.  And it’s given us countless opportunities to work with many of the greatest names in jazz.
