4+1 Accelerated Undergraduate and Graduate Degree Pathway in Engineering and MBA
An MBA is a useful degree for an engineer who aspires to advance his/her career within a corporation, or who wants to open a consulting business or a startup company. Learning how to solve different business problems and understanding marketing and management related issues are some key skills an MBA degree can teach you. Having already obtained a technical degree, an MBA supplements your education in the wider areas of management that usually include subjects such as finance, marketing, organizational behavior, and management strategy.
The 4+1 in Engineering MBA program allows interested and qualified students to complete a bachelor’s degree and an MBA with a concentration in Engineering in five years. Generally, students in 4+1 programs focus on their bachelor’s degree requirements during their first three years, a mix of bachelor’s and master's requirements in the fourth year, and only master's requirements in the fifth year. Each degree is awarded once the specific degree requirements are successfully met.
The engineering concentration leverages graduate-level coursework in engineering to fulfill the elective portion of the MBA requirements, and requires engineering design work with a business focus as a capstone. The concentration was tailored to be pursued by current engineering students as part of an accelerated 4+1 program, but it is also available to anyone who has already earned a bachelor's degree in engineering or in a related field of study. In addition to the core requirements of the MBA program, the following requirements apply to the engineering concentration:
1. Select three graduate-level elective courses in engineering; an
2. Complete EGN 602 Graduate Design Project to fulfill the MBA 698 (Practicum) requirement in the last semester of the MBA program.

The MBA program is comprised of 27 credit hours of core courses and 9 credit hours of elective courses. In addition, up to 15 credit hours of foundation courses may be required.
Students in the 4+1 program are required to maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or higher after 90 credit hours of undergraduate coursework to remain in good standing and be allowed to continue in the 4+1 program. Enrollment in 600-level MBAcourses may only occur in a student's final semester of undergraduate coursework.

Students may apply to the 4+1 program directly from high school or any time after the end of their first semester of undergraduate studies. Students currently enrolled in a baccalaureate degree program at USM may enter the 4+1 program by meeting the regular MBA, 4+1 admission criteria of 3.0 or higher USM GPA and matriculation in the Engineering program.
