Professional and Continuing Education (PCE) provides and supports opportunities which enable students to make progress towards completing their degrees, expanding their professional capacities, and enriching their lives through lifelong learning. PCE supports the transition and development of academic programs into alternative formats and schedules that meet the needs of today's diverse student population. Through partnerships with academic departments, the division provides leadership in expanding higher education opportunities for the people of Maine and beyond.
Program and Services
Center for Technology Enhanced Learning (CTEL)
The Center for Technology-Enhanced Learning (CTEL) offers resources to USM faculty and staff, including learning and instructional design support and faculty development. With the goal of expanding higher education opportunities for the people of Maine and beyond, CTEL focuses it efforts on supporting courses and academic programs that attract new audiences to USM, such as, place-bound or working adults. CTEL works closely with other USM units including the Glickman Library, ITMS, Learning Commons, and the Center for Collaboration and Development. CTEL delivers year-round programming through weekly posts to the USM Connected Blog and various workshop formats. CTEL also offers the following grant programs: CTEL Course Design grants, CTEL Technology-Enhanced Learning grants, and CTEL Course Innovation Grants. CTEL works with academic departments to offer undergraduate and graduate programs in a fully online or blended format. For 2016-17, the following programs are available online:

Students who matriculate into an online degree or certificate program are assigned to an Online Advisor who will support them through graduation.
Professional Development Programs
Professional Development Programs (PDP) provide professional development opportunities for individuals with a focus on intensive, in-depth certificate programs and short-term, skills-based courses. These noncredit programs earn CEUs which are required by some professions for licensure. PDP also offers customized training to meet the specific business needs of local organizations. Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at USM
The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at USM is a membership organization for people 50 years old and older, committed to providing a variety of intellectually challenging courses and activities in a creative and inclusive learning community. An extensive array of liberal arts and science courses are peer taught by volunteer faculty. There are no entrance requirements or grades, and no college background is needed. OLLI at USM also sponsors lectures including the SAGE series, social activities, and educational travel. Membership and course fees are affordable and scholarships are available. Maine Senior College Network (MSCN)
The Maine Senior College Network is a consortium of the seventeen senior colleges located throughout the state from Wells to Fort Kent, Bethel to Machias. The senior colleges provide intellectually stimulating non-credit courses and special learning opportunities for adults over the age of 50. Courses are taught by volunteers and each group has its own volunteer leadership. Conference Services provides comprehensive event planning services to internal and external groups accessing USM facilities for meetings, conferences or other functions. Services (including space rentals, catering, registration, reporting, logistics, and planning) are available both on- and off-site.
