The USM's School of Social Work Turns 50!
Founded in 1971 as a Department of Social Welfare offering an undergraduate major, social work at USM has come a long way over 50 years! In 2003, after the 2001 addition of the MSW program, we became a School of Social Work, with two CSWE accredited programs. We have explored our history, thanks to the leadership of Dr. Sandra Wachholz who undertook a history project to trace our path from 1971 to the present, and Emerita Professor Dr. Ana Lazar who offered her knowledge—and memories—of our programs from their earliest days.
Numerous people with early affiliations with the school were interviewed for this project and this history will serve as the basis for a celebration during this important year.
We had hoped to host an in person event to honor our 50th anniversary this fall, but this did not seem wise given COVID. Instead of planning for a virtual event, we decided to postpone the celebration until Spring 2022 as we want to bring our community together when we hope it will be safe to gather in person.
So save the date: we have reserved Tuesday, April 12, 2022 from 5-7pm for this celebratory social event that will take place in the Abromson Center on the Portland Campus. Stay tuned for the details that will be made available in spring semester 2022!
