USM Celebrates its 138th Commencement Ceremony on May 12, 2018
The University of Southern Maine will celebrate its 138th Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 12 beginning at 9 a.m. at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland. Close to 1400 students will be graduating this spring, including 1028 undergraduates, 369 graduate students and Champ the Mascot (otherwise known as Ian Allen, communications major).

Florence Auma Aliardo, a native of South Sudan, will graduate with her bachelor’s degree in social work.

The University of Southern Maine celebrated its 137th Commencement Ceremony on Saturday with more than 900 graduate and undergraduate students marching across the Cross Insurance Arena stage following remarks by award-winning journalist David Brancaccio.
Tonya Bailey-Curry, 2017 Featured Graduate
Even as her children attended college, Tonya Bailey-Curry worked toward her own degrees, graduating from Central Maine Community College before coming to USM. She earned her undergraduate degree in social work at USM's Lewiston-Auburn College before earning her Master of Social Work on the Portland Campus.
Abdalla Hassan, 2017 Featured Graduate
In his senior year, Abdalla Hassan was selected as the Disability Services Center's Undergraduate Social Work Intern. The former vice-president of the USM Multicultural Center, Hassan organized efforts in 2015 to help several USM students to attend the annual Care National Conference.
Hannah Binger and Molly Stevens, 2017 Featured Graduates
Hannah Binger and Molly Stevens became friends in Kindergarten and continued together through elementary, middle and high school. At USM, the duo studied side by side to earn Bachelor of Social Work degrees.

Aaron Clarke aided USM Associate Professor and Resident Composer Dan Sonenberg in his opera, "The Summer King," which premiered April 29th in Pittsburgh.
Andrew Kiezulas, 2017 Featured Graduate
In 2016, Andrew Kiezulas helped create the Recovery Oriented Campus Center (ROCC) on USM's Portland Campus, which is building a community of students in recovery from substance use and other mental health conditions.
