Luke Johnas joined an effort by USM's chapter of Engineers Without Borders that journeyed to Villa Nueva, Guatemala. During the week-long trip, Johnas and others installed five solar water heaters for an orphanage.

Daniel Del Gallo, 2017 Featured Graduate

In March, Dan Del Gallo became the first national champion wrestler in USM history, winning his class at the 2017 NCAA Division III Wrestling National Championships. He is also a scholar, twice earning elite status from the NCAA as the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grades participating at his finals.

USM to celebrate 137th Commencement Ceremony on May 13

The University of Southern Maine will celebrate its 137th Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 13 at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland. More than 900 students will take part in the morning ceremony, beginning at 9 a.m. Award-winning journalist David Brancaccio will deliver the keynote address and will receive an honorary degree. Also receiving an honorary degree will be Mary L. Bonauto, the civil rights project director at GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders.

Award-winning journalist David Brancaccio to deliver 2017 Commencement Address at USM

The University of Southern Maine is pleased to announce that award-winning journalist David Brancaccio will deliver the keynote address at the 2017 Commencement Ceremony. Honorary degrees will be conferred upon both Brancaccio and Mary L. Bonauto, who successfully argued before the U.S. Supreme Court in the historic case Obergefell v. Hodges, establishing the freedom to marry for same-sex couples nationwide.

Additional Commencement-related Ceremonies

Several ceremonies are taking place prior to USM's 2016 Commencement, including the Multicultural Graduation Ceremony on May 3, the Lavender Graduation Ceremony on May 4, the Veterans Graduation Recognition Ceremony on May 5, and the Nurse Pinning Ceremony on May 13.
