What’s In The Video
Like last year’s ceremony, this year’s virtual Commencement celebration will be a YouTube-hosted video. The program will feature individual recognition of each USM graduate, pieces performed by USM School of Music students, and remarks from keynote speaker Dr. Ibram X. Kendi, student speaker USM Grace Muheto, USM’s newest Distinguished Professor, Dr. Shelton Waldrep, and USM’s four honorary degree recipients: Yvon Chouinard, author, activist, and founder of Patagonia Inc.; Timothy P. Wilson, senior advisor and director of the Maine Seeds Programs; and Beverly and David Worthington, co-founders of the Worthington Scholarship Foundation.
What to Expect When You’re Watching
- The virtual Commencement video will begin playing shortly after 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 8.
- Before the video begins, you’ll see a countdown timer, indicating the amount of time remaining before the video plays.
- The video will be captioned and include ASL interpretation. To experience the video with professional captioning, you'll need to toggle the caption option/icon in the lower part of the video window. (Look for the square in the lower-right area of the video window containing the letters "CC.") The video will feature picture-in-picture ASL interpretation that will appear automatically.
- After the approximately 2.5-hour program concludes, the virtual Commencement program will continue to be available for viewing — and, at that time, you will be able to fast-forward and rewind to your favorite parts.
