USM alumna searching for common ground in gun control discussion with documentary

USM alumna and filmmaker Vickie Morgan hopes to find new insight in the gun control debate by getting people to talk. Morgan plans to direct an as-yet-untitled documentary in which a group of people from both sides of the divisive issue will talk about their differences with each other and Maine psychologist Dr. Kevin Polk.

USM presents 2017 Academic Film Showcase on May 10

A collection of dramatic short films created by student filmmakers at the University of Southern Maine will be presented on May 10 at the 2017 Academic Film Showcase. The free public event will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Talbot Lecture Hall, located in Luther Bonney Hall on USM's Portland Campus.

Dennis Gilbert Wins 2016 Donald Harward Faculty Award

Dennis Gilbert, Lecturer in Media Studies, has won the 2016 Donald Harward Faculty Award from the Maine Campus Compact. The Donald Harward Faculty Award for Service-Learning Excellence recognizes faculty who integrate community or public service into the curriculum and who work to institutionalize service-learning. Award recipients have shown clear evidence of reflection, community benefit, reciprocity with community partners, and a commitment to advocating for service-learning and/or community action on campus and beyond.

Meet Maine Association of Broadcasters Award Winner Colin Mader

Colin Mader was selected as one of two Maine Association of Broadcasters Award recipients for the Spring 2016 semester. Concerning Mader, Professor of Media Studies David Pierson said, "I have no doubt that Colin will become a noteworthy filmmaker. Colin is serious, passionate, and very talented with a keen eye for visual storytelling. I'm looking forward to seeing his work in regional and national film festivals. "
