The piece, titled "Lift," is a sculpture by Aaron T. Stephan.
The piece was commissioned through Maine's Percent for Art law administered by the Maine Arts Commission. The sculpture is a table and chairs elongated to 20 feet.
Stephan said his work was inspired by the function of the building.
"I see the Community Education Center as a bridge," he said. "It is a gathering place where the community shares experience and knowledge. A piece of this dynamic exchange is carried away by each individual becoming a part of their everyday lives, mingling with others, and continuously returning to the proverbial table. The vitality of the classroom is a catalyst for persistent dialogues that continue throughout life. 'Lift' embodies the dialogue that ensues when we step out of the classroom. 'Lift' points to the infinite possibilities of conversation. 'Lift' is a monument to the powerful voices of gathered individuals."
