The Confucius Institute at USM is now helping Maine high school students with an interest in China and basic Chinese proficiency attend a summer camp in China through the Chinese Bridge program.
The Chinese Bridge Summer Camp for Secondary School Students is an annual Chinese language and culture experience sponsored by Hanban with the cooperation of the Confucius Institutes around the world. The program aims at enhancing Sino-foreign youth exchanges, deepening secondary school students’ understanding of and personal experience with Chinese language and culture, and stimulating their passion for learning Chinese.
The trip is typically held in mid-late July, and provides students with Chinese language classes as well as a visit to the Cultural Experience Center housed at Confucius Institute Headquarters. Students will also engage with Chinese society through exchanges with Chinese students, home-stay experiences, and sightseeing. The trip will begin and end in Beijing, the capital of China, and will include visits to the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, and Tiananmen Square. Between the welcoming and send-off ceremonies in Beijing, students will travel to a second city in China, selected by the group.
There will be one chaperone accompanying every 10 students. Chaperones will be experienced teaching K-12 students, and at least one of them will be proficient in Chinese and have familiarity with China and Chinese culture. Click here for more information on chaperones, or if you are interested in being a chaperone.
