Core Curriculum

Prior Learning, test credits and the USM Core

Test credits and the Core

For information on how AP, DSST and CLEP and other tests may be used to satisfy Core requirements, see the information provided by the Office for Prior Learning Assessment.

Other Prior Learning: Academic Portfolio Assessment

Students may also be eligible to have prior-learning of a non-academic/non-credit-bearing nature applied to a specific Core requirement.

For information on the academic portfolio assessment process, visit the Prior Learning Assessment Portfolio page and follow the instructions provided there.

Students should carefully review the learning outcomes for the specific requirement in question prior to deciding whether academic portfolio assessment is a good option for them. Students seeking portfolio credit for any USM Core requirement must first consult with the Director of Prior Learning Assessment. Students must complete the PLA Portfolio Workshop to submit a portfolio for consideration in relation to any USM Core requirement.  Successful portfolios will demonstrate and document achievement of the outcomes in a manner and at a level comparable to that demonstrated by students who successfully complete an approved Core course.  Credit for successful portfolios is awarded and posted in compliance with all Prior Learning Assessment policies and processes.

Portfolio requirements for Ethical Inquiry, Social Responsibility, and Citizenship

In addition to all other required Portfolio narrative components, all EISRC portfolios narratives must address all of the EISRC Learning Outcomes.  In addition, students must complete a required common reading utilized in USM EISRC courses, and apply that reading throughout their narrative.  The reading provides the conceptual framework involved in achievement of EISRC outcomes 1, 2, 3, and 4. Narratives should apply the conceptual framework from the common reading in addressing these outcomes, and must connect the prior learning experience, the conceptual framework, and the outcome.  A copy of the common text may be obtained from the Director of Prior Learning Assessment.

Successful portfolios will demonstrate and document achievement of the EISRC outcomes in a manner and at a level comparable to that demonstrated by students who successfully complete an approved EISRC course. Credit for successful EISRC portfolios is awarded and posted in compliance with all Prior Learning Assessment policies and procedures.
