Karen Suhrhoff is a Lecturer in the Counselor Education Program with specializations in School Counseling and Mental Health Counseling. She has over 25 years of experience in the counseling field, and both her CRC and School Counselor certifications have allowed her to work in various outpatient, day treatment, residential and hospital clinical settings as well as to provide both general and special education counseling in the public school system. She has extensive experience working with children and adolescents, both as an administrator and a clinician, as well as in the Substance Abuse field. She is a member of the National Education Association (NEA), American School Counselor Association (ASCA), Maine School Counselor Association (MESCA), and the New York State School Counselor Association (NYSSCA).
In addition, her expertise and certifications in utilizing experiential group techniques, such as Project Adventure activities and cooperative learning exercises, has enhanced her specialization in group counseling, as well as in the consultation and training of staff in both clinical and educational environments. For the past 20 years, Karen’s passion has been helping to create safe, cohesive and consistent learning communities for all students in order to achieve academic, social, and emotional success during their formative years. Whether it is creating classroom lessons based on experiential and cooperative exercises, facilitating psycho-educational and Response to Intervention small groups, or designing school-wide initiatives with team members that enhance community cohesion, her goal is to assist the school administration and faculty to create a community where the students learn, practice, and master the skills necessary to become life-long learners and critical thinkers. This process includes teaching and training the administrators and faculty in the theory and techniques necessary to ensure an environment where students with various learning styles, strengths, needs, familial and cultural sensibilities can be fully supported and available for learning.
Karen and her husband moved to Kennebunkport full time this past summer from Upstate NY. She spends her free time outdoors biking, walking her dogs, gardening, and reading at the beach. She also enjoys antiquing, cooking, and going to the gym. As a regular yoga practitioner, she hopes to become a certified yoga instructor in the next five years.
