Marty is the founding Director of the Youth and Community Engagement Team at the University of Southern Maine’s Cutler Institute. For the past thirty years Marty has been advocating for equitable opportunities, resources and policies that support youth and families achieve their educational and economic goals (or potential). Much of Marty’s work is about supporting organizations and leaders to manage their relationships and organizations in a more cross-collaborative way, which he believes will lead to better service alignment, leveraged resources and the best impact possible. Marty continues to be inspired by the thousands of young people he has met throughout the country that have been affected by poverty, social and racial inequality. He still has a faded newspaper clipping in his office, a quote from Thurgood Marshall from 1991:
“None of us has gotten where we are solely by pulling ourselves up from our own bootstraps, We got here because somebody-a parent, a teacher, and Ivy League crony or a few nuns-bent down and helped us pick up our boots.”
