In May 2019, Jean Talbot, Research Associate at the Maine Rural Health Research Center (MRHRC) led a round-table discussion on issues related to rural tobacco control and prevention at the annual conference of the National Network of Public Health Institutes. In June, Erika Ziller, Director of the MRHRC and Jean Talbot each gave presentations for the CDC Office of Smoking and Health (OSH)'s National Tobacco Control Program (NCTP) Technical Assistance webinar. The NCTP provides tobacco control funding and technical support to state and territorial health departments. Erika presented research by the MRHRC on rural-urban differences in the decline of adolescent cigarette smoking, and Jean provided highlights from Advancing Tobacco Prevention and Control in Rural America, a report that she co-authored with a team from MRHRC. This report was recently included as a resource on CDC OSH's web page (https://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/disparities/geographic/index.htm) on tobacco-related disparities associated with geographic regions.
