YLAT Hosts Its Thirty-First Teen Conference for Youth in Maine’s Child Welfare System

The Youth Leadership Advisory Team (YLAT) hosted its 2nd Virtual Teen Conference on Wednesday, June 23, 2021. The conference, titled "2021: Virtually Unstoppable", celebrated 31 years of teen conferences for youth in Maine's child welfare system, as well as the adults who care for them. Virtual, interactive workshops featured a variety of local vendors including Maine Family Planning, OUTMaine, Jobs for Maine Graduates, and the Office of Child and Family Services. Workshops focused on practical life skills such as budgeting and forming healthy relationships along with self-care practices such as art therapy, movement, and dance.

Over the course of the day, YLAT had a total of 91 participants, with 37 youth and alumni and 52 adults attending. The keynote speaker, Michael Sanders, a national edutainer, featured two Maine young people and focused on messages of resiliency in achieving personal goals to end up being truly unstoppable.

Each YLAT teen conference is developed and planned by the Teen Conference Planning Committee, the Office of Child and Family Services, and youth members of statewide YLAT groups. YLAT looks forward to celebrating its 32nd Teen Conference in person in June 2022.
