USM has established a program to help students in emergency situations.
Students may request funds for an emergency situation, or for unanticipated and compelling circumstances that jeopardize their ability to successfully continue in school. Student Emergency Funds will be provided in the form of grants, awards will be determined by committee based on the individual need. Award amounts typically range from $100 to $500. Decisions regarding amount and disbursement of funds are made on a case-by-case basis. Awards are not considered loans and do not require repayment. Some funds may be considered income and are therefore subject to federal taxes.

To be considered eligible, the student must:
- Be currently enrolled.
- Be in good standing.
- Demonstrate financial hardship due to an emergency situation, or for unanticipated and compelling circumstances that jeopardize the student’s ability to successfully continue in school.
- Consider and utilize other sources of funding as appropriate, such as recommended student loans, unless not available in a sufficiently timely manner.
- Students seeking assistance during summer sessions and are not enrolled but are registered for fall courses may qualify for alternative forms of assistance.
Expenses that will be considered include, but are not limited to:
- Medical, dental or mental health emergency expenses that are not covered by insurance.
- Replacement costs of essential personal belongings in the event of fire, theft or natural disaster that are not covered by insurance.
- Travel in the case of the death or illness of an immediate family member.
- Temporary support costs for a student in a dangerous situation due to threats or acts of violence.
- Medication/Prescription expenses.
- Books, fees, or other school related expenses that were not anticipated.
- Safety related needs (i.e. changing locks, cell phone, short term emergency shelter).
- Individually-recommended or required services that are considered critical to a student’s success, for example, diagnostic testing for Accessibility Resources.
- Support for emergency dependent-related expenses, for example, child care.
Expenses that will not be considered are as follows:
- Tuition, fees, room, board, and other standard expenses associated with attending USM for those already receiving need-based financial aid.
- Fines, late fees, traffic violations, or court costs.
- Costs of optional programs, entertainment, recreation, non-emergency travel and other non-essential expenses.
Priority for Student Emergency Funds will be given based on:
- The urgency of the situation.
- The student’s overall financial picture and level of hardship.
- Whether other resources/support available to the student have been utilized.
