USM Alumna is Named 2020 Assistant Principal of the Year

Erin Maguire has been named the 2020 Assistant Principal of the Year by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) and the Maine Principals’ Association (MPA).  Maguire, who received her undergraduate degree from the University of Maine in 2004 and then her degree in Educational Leadership from USM is 2011, is the Assistant Principal of Bonny Eagle High School in Standish.

“One doesn't become an assistant principal expecting glory or praise,” says Maguire.  “Actually most of my days are spent receiving the opposite because I am constantly the bearer of bad news. The call when your child has made a mistake that has ramifications, the voice of reason to work students through conflict when emotions are high, the one who goes in the classroom to evaluate the teacher. And you wonder from day to day is it worth it? To receive an honor like this was incredibly humbling, more so than I expected when I was first nominated. And the prize is as much mine as it is the community I work in and people I work with. I think it a testament to the work of Bonny Eagle High School over the last 7 years and MSAD 6. But it reminds me... it's worth it. It always has been.”

Maguire was honored for her commitment to educational leadership and her tireless support of the Bonny Eagle student body.  “Erin Maguire has been the epitome of what we want from an instructional leader.  Her leadership and her ability to connect with all students is commendable,” says, Holly Couturier, MPA Executive Director of the Professional Division.

Maguire began her career out of college as a math teacher at Sacopee Valley High School in Hiram for two years before moving to Gray-New Gloucester High School where she was also a math teacher, and the head of the math department.  In 2013, Maguire was tapped to be the Assistant Principal at Bonny Eagle.

The National Association of Secondary Schools awards an Assistant Principal of the Year in each state in the US.  In Maine this process is administered by the Maine Principals’ Association.  Maguire is a member of both associations.
