Exercise, Health, and Sport Sciences Professors Present at National Conference

Brian Toy, PhD, ATC, Associate Professor of Exercise, Health and Sport Sciences (EHSS) and Director of USM’s Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) Accredited Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP), and Jim Schilling, PhD, ATC, CSCS, Assistant Professor of EHSS and a faculty member in the ATEP, both presented juried poster presentations at the 2013 meeting of the National Athletic Trainers’ Associations Biannual Athletic Training Educators’ Conference. 

Dr. Toy’s presentation, entitled Addressing the Health Related Needs of College-Aged Music Performance Students described how USM’s Athletic Training and Music faculty have combined expertise to educate students enrolled in USM’s School of Music about the specific health care needs of musician’s through a course entitled “EYE 118: Musician’s Health, a Path to Peak Performance. 

Dr. Shilling’s presentation, entitled Instructional Design Strategies to Manage Extraneous Cognitive Load introduced supported instructional strategies that minimize extraneous cognitive load in the working memory system to ensure an optimal learning environment for the athletic training student.
