The USM English major is devoted to the study of language, literature, and culture.

The USM English major is devoted to the study of language, literature, and culture. Focusing upon the British and American literary traditions, the major exposes students to a range of literature in different historical eras. It also offers students the opportunity to explore other traditions such as Irish or Canadian literature, women’s writing, and African- American writing. In addition to literatures written in English, course offerings include world literatures in translation from the classical to contemporary eras.

Faculty Lecture Series
The Department of English announces its Faculty Lecture Series for 2015-2016.
Irish documentary film-maker Maurice Fitzpatrick will be conducting lectures and workshops at USM, St. Joseph’s College, and Bates College on September 8, 9 and 10. These lectures and workshops are free and open to the public. Entitled “Representing the Irish Troubles on Screen,” Mr. Fitzpatrick will draw on documentary films he has made for BBC about Northern Ireland and from his work in progress “John Hume in America.”
Rereading Goethe, Rethinking Culture
Professor Gerald Peters’ book, "Rereading Goethe, Rethinking Culture," was recently published.
