Tutoring - USM Learning Commons

USM LEARNING COMMONS TUTORING

3rd Floor of Glickman Library (USM Portland Campus) 780-4228

Free tutors are available to all USM students. ESL tutors are specifically trained by the ESL department to assist ESL students with their homework in writing, grammar, computer skills and pronunciation.

SETTING UP TUTORING SESSIONS & CHECKING IN

  1. ESL students at USM have the privilege of setting up a weekly tutor session. This privilege is not available to non-ESL students, so it is important to take full advantage of this (i.e. please show up on time every week.)

IF YOU HAVE TO CANCEL YOUR APPOINTMENT, PLEASE DO SO BEFORE THE SCHEDULED APPOINTMENT BY CALLING  780-4228 .

  1. Each tutoring session is 50 minutes. Schedule your appointment when you have a free hour so you can arrive promptly and get the most out of this time.

  1. Check in with the Front Desk Attendant each time you go to the Learning Commons. This way the staff will know you have come for your appointment.

MEETING WITH YOUR TUTOR

  1. Tutors are not your teachers, they are there to help you with your work but not do it for you. Try your best to do your work first, and do not expect your tutor to give you easy answers. Tutors can advise you on how to start/improve your papers, but they will expect you to write them yourself.

  1. Your tutor will assist you ONLY in subjects in which you are enrolled.

  1. If you are meeting to discuss a written assignment, please bring the paper typed and double-spaced.  If your paper is longer than 5 pages, please give a copy to the Desk Attendant in advance of your appointment. Your tutor will read your paper before meeting with you.

  1. The Learning Commons is not a “drop-off and pick-up” service. If you have a paper that you want your tutor to go over, you must have a scheduled appointment to discuss your paper.

Please visit Learning Commons website for more information.
