Extended Teacher Education Program (ETEP)

The Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation

The University of Southern Maine Graduate Teacher Education Program is designated to be one of 29 campuses nationwide to receive Woodrow Wilson – Rockefeller Brothers Fund Fellowship (WW-RBF) Fellows began in the 2011-2012 academic year. Twenty-five WW-RBF Fellows are elected annually to enroll in a master’s degree program that leads to teacher licensure at one of these 29 institutions. Learn to teach where there is public school commitment to equity and 21st Century skills so that EVERY CHILD from grades 7-12 is given a laptop as a learning tool.  In many of our partner schools laptops are integrated into student centered, project based learning following the Expeditionary Learning model.

In a nine-month program, immersed in full time internships in diverse urban classrooms with over 35% of students who are English Language Learners and up to 75% of students who qualify for free and reduced lunch, teaching candidates hone context specific teaching skills that are culturally responsive and effective.  We also have rural and suburban placements available. 

With in-state tuition at about $12,000 (2010-2011), the teacher certification credential, which is reciprocal with most other states, credentialing becomes very accessible.  Teacher certification programs available in an intensive 9-month format, as well as Unified programs that provide dual certification with Special Education in K-8 or 7-12 or K-12 ESL certification (English as a Second Language).  The K-8 Unified program is completely on-line with remote video camera with supervision available. 

Additional scholarships are available, particularly to support math, science and ESL teaching candidates.
Work in partnership with teaching candidates from the Newcomer ETEP program to support recent immigrants and refugees, many of whom were teachers in their home nations, to become certified public school teachers.
