Franco-American Collection

Window Exhibit Celebrating Franco-American Women

Window Display

March is International Women’s Month, as well as the International Month of Francophones. For this reason, the Franco-American Collection has put together a small window exhibit at our LAC campus location to celebrate Franco-American women. University of Southern Maine students, faculty and staff can come by the window when on campus to check out the exhibit! For those of you who are members of the public, we hope these pictures will spark your curiosity. Let us know if you have any questions, or want to share about Franco-American women you’d like us to feature.

This exhibit features images of Aurore Lessard Paré as well as her daughter, Marguerite Roy’s biography of her, Aurore: My Franco-American Mother. Also of interest, Bertha Bolduc Chaffers’ school notebook from 1902, as well as an image of Bertha as an adult featuring Margaret Chase Smith. We have also included an image of the staff of the Le Messager newspaper from 1880, including Camile Lessard Bissonette, suffragist and author. Also highlighted are politician Georgette Berube and WWII nurse Alma Gastonguay.
