Lecture: "Out of Nowhere": Franco-Somali Relations - Maria Padian

March 27, 2014
4:00 PM to 5:00 PM
USM LAC Room 170

TheFranco-American Collection will be hosting a lecture by local author Maria Padian on themes in her novel, “Out of Nowhere,” Thursday March 27th at 4 pm in room 170 at USM LAC.

Padian, who lives in Brunwick, is the author of the critically-acclaimed ”Out of Nowhere”, a novel for young adults which chronicles the blossoming friendhsip between a Franco-American boy, Tom Bouchard, and Saeed, a member of the Somali community which has recently moved to Tom’s home, the fictional town of Enniston, Maine.

This book deals with a topic that’s has dominated discussions in Lewiston-Auburn for over a decade but it does so in a unique way.  Our hope is that by inviting Ms. Padiam to discuss her book, we’ll provoke a wider conversation on the parallels and relationships between the historic immigrant population of Maine’s Franco-Americans, and the newer arrivals to our state.

The event is part of the Franco-American Collection’s Spring Lecture series, organized in partnership with USM LAC faculty and made possible by support from the University of Maine System’s Diversity Committee.

The event is free and open to the public.
