The Division of Human Resources is responsible for recruiting, supporting, and retaining a qualified workforce whose primary mission is to ensure the success of USM students. Our division oversees Employment Services, Benefits, Payroll, Employee and Organization Development, Equity and Compliance, and Labor Relations.
In partnership with University leadership, Human Resources develops and delivers strategic, innovative, and efficient human resource programs and services designed to support the mission and employees of the University of Southern Maine and promote fiscal sustainability. We succeed in our efforts by focusing on the mission of teaching, research, and public service, by increasing individual and institutional effectiveness, and by supporting student success, active learning, and community engagement.
Our goal is to attract, support, and retain outstanding faculty, staff, and students at USM and to provide leadership and guidance that promotes excellence in organizational and individual performance.
The Benefits Department administers and coordinates the many employee benefit programs offered by USM. We oversee health and dental insurance, disability benefits, disability management, workers' compensation, advantage accounts, retirement, family and medical leave, domestic partnership agreements, wellness, and tuition waivers.
The Employee and Organization Development Department supports personal, professional, and organizational growth at USM. We focus on career and educational development for employees, work unit effectiveness, supervisor and supervisee relations, and organizational change. Our services include consultation, employee education, mediation, and facilitation.
The Employment Services Department provides detailed guidance to the USM community on filling positions, including faculty, salaried/professional, hourly/classified, temporary, contractor, and volunteer. We supply information to potential job applicants and to newly hired employees. We also provide procedures for hourly/classified reclassification review and salaried/professional position review. And we assist with performance management and terminations and maintain employee records.
The Equity & Compliance Office seeks to provide equal access for under-represented groups at USM and ensure a safe and harassment-free environment. We address concerns about discrimination, sexual harassment, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and accommodations. Our tools include conflict resolution and compliance with discrimination laws and university policies.
The Labor Relations Department deals with oversight and compliance issues related to collective bargaining agreements. We engage in collective bargaining negotiations, advise the university on its workforce and workplace rights and responsibilities, participate in individual cases, and provide information to administrators regarding the terms of labor contracts, policies, and procedures.
The Payroll Department has overall responsibility for ensuring that all employees, including student employees, are paid in a timely and accurate manner and that necessary data are maintained and submitted. We can help an employee understand their paycheck and update their payroll information.
