University of Winchester, England
My experience studying abroad at the University of Winchester far exceeded my expectations. Everyone tells you it's a life changing experience, and it truly is. Not only did I get to make friends from across the U.S. who were also studying abroad, but also ones from a myriad of countries, even Australia. Two of my best friends that I made just happened to have the same name as me, so there was always confusion as to which "Julie" we were referring to. We bonded over the new exciting culture of England. Winchester is also the quintessential English town, with the cobblestone High Street, the rolling hills with grazing sheep and cows, and a centuries old cathedral.
I feel like I am living my life to the fullest extent when I am traveling, and I had the wonderful opportunity to do that for three months. The Dara Kaufman Scholarship helped make that opportunity a reality for me, and now I have so many memories and experiences that will last a lifetime. I was able to travel to England with a friend of mine, but we quickly made other connections at the University of Winchester and got to travel to other countries in Europe with our new friends. The close proximity of the countries over there made it possible to fit in classes during the weekdays and travel on the weekends. We got to go to Paris, Dublin, Rome, Salzburg, Prague, Barcelona, and Munich. But the town of Winchester where my university was based has a special place in my heart, and I can't wait to go back someday. I hope every college student is able to experience studying abroad in a new country. There's no better time to get to do all this traveling then when you are young. Being away from home and in a completely new place helps you grow as a person and discover more about yourself. While at the end you're relieved to go home and get to sleep in your bed, it won't be long until you get the urge to travel again.
