Scholar Health Insurance
International students and scholars at USM are required to have health and accident insurance coverage for themselves and their dependents living in the United States.
USM has a plan designed especially for international students and scholars on F and J visas. More information about this policy will be coming later this summer. USM has worked with Cross Insurance of Lewiston, ME and Conslidated Health Plans to develop a policy that provides excellent coverage. Also, this is a summary of Prices for the 2015-16 Academic Year are as folllows:
Each Child: $2,340
Insurance coverage may also be purcahsed for the Fall or Spring semester only if you are not going to be at USM for the full academic year. Coverage for one semester is available at a reduced rate. Please talk with the International Programs staff for more information.
To sign up for this plan please visit the International Programs office at 101 Payson Smith, USM Portland Campus for enrollment paperwork. Or print off the 2015-16 Enrollment Form complete it and return it to the Student Billing Office in Portland or Gorham. The charge will be added to your student account and you will need to make arrangements for payment.If you are purchasing insurance for one semester only please contact the International Programs Office.
International students and scholars are not required to purchase the USM plan, but they must have proof of coverage. If you have your own plan from home or another insurance carrier please be sure that you have provided that information to the International Programs office.
Short Term Coverage: If you will only be with us for a few months it may make more sense for you to puchase a monthly plan. Listed below are a few other options which meet the J-1 visa requirements. Please note that we do not work directly with these plans so please be sure you read the information carefully and/or talk with one of their repreentatives to understand how the coverage will work if you need to use it while in the US.
