The University of Southern Maine has campuses in Portland, Gorham and Lewiston, Maine. Each campus is quite different and offers students the opportunity to take part in several types of experiences at one institution.
The Portland Campus
Portland, Maine, is a small city of just under 70,000 which overlooks the islands of Casco Bay. Portland is the winner of numerous awards including One of America's most livable cities (Forbes.com) and a Top 12 world travel destination (Frommers). In addition Portland Maine is often recognized as being one of the safest cities in the US as well as one of the happiest. Portland's art scene, world renowned dining, shopping and recreation opportunities are comparable to cities twice its size, but USM students strive in its friendly, relaxed small town pace. Additionally Portland is well known as a creative location for small town business developers.

The Gorham campus provides a classic New England College Experience with rolling hills and beautiful views. All USM residence halls are located in Gorham and provide students with plenty of opportunities to make new friends through living and learning communities, campus activities and one-on-one advising and mentoring opportunities. The Gorham campus is home to most University athletic teams and many of our STEM programs including Engineering and Information Technology. The campus is easily walkable and regular free bus service between the Gorham and Portland campuses makes it easy to get into the city.
The Lewiston-Auburn Campus
USM’s Lewiston-Auburn College (USM LAC), is the only one that is both a college and a campus! At LAC students will experience a very supportive and friendly community where faculty, students and staff work together to ensure a positive, intellectually invigorating experience. LAC was established by the people of Lewiston-Auburn, offering both bachelors and master’s degrees, with the resources of a research university whose mission is to serve the region.
From Portland Freeport, Maine, home of L.L. Bean and boutique outlet shopping is just 20 minutes away. Boston, Mass is 2 hours by bus or car and New York is just 50 minutes by plane.
After a semester in Maine, you won’t be surprised that Maine’s unofficial slogan is Maine: The Way Life Should Be! With its proximity to mountains, the Atlantic Ocean and lakes students have plenty of recreational opportunities year round. Maine is also fortunate to benefit from four glorious seasons, including a colorful fall and quintessential American summer. While other parts of the country simply turn cold in the winter, Maine benefits from picturesque snowfall that is perfect for skiing, skating and snow tubing.
