Guide to Finding Materials in Special Collections

A tool we often use to assist students in examining a book as a physical object is The Material Analysis Form or The Material Analysis Form for Early Books.

To take advantage of the thousands of photographs in our collections, classes can use the Photograph Analysis Form to take a closer look and learn how to use images as a source of information.

Material Culture

In addition to rare books, manuscripts, and photographs many of our collections are rich in material culture containing political buttons, t-shirts, posters, household objects, and even a Gay Monopoly board game. To work with these items, we have created a Material Culture Analysis Form.

Digital Resources

In Digital Commons, you can find images of collection items, finding aids to direct research in our manuscript collections, videos of past programs, and more.
