Bus Service at USM
Free local bus transportation
Did you know that all University of Southern Maine (USM) students, faculty, and staff can get free local bus transportation on all three campuses?
Every full-time student enrolled in classes at USM can enjoy free rides to and from classes, study sessions, work, internships, sporting events, and more.
Ride in comfort, enjoying free WiFi and built-in USB charging ports for all your gear.
Bus service options include:
- METRO Husky Line
If you're traveling between the Portland and Gorham campuses you can ride the METRO Husky Line, part of the Greater Portland METRO bus service, using your USM Campus ID Card.
- Lewiston-Auburn citylink
Students, faculty, and staff at USM’s Lewiston-Auburn College (LAC) can travel for free between home, classes, work, and more using Lewiston-Auburn’s citylink bus (also known as the Purple Bus) system.
Both buses offer bike-friendly transportation
Both the METRO Husky Line buses and Lewiston-Auburn’s citylink buses are equipped with bicycle carrying racks, making it even easier to get out and explore the world outside your USM community.
Ride the bus? Get rewarded.
You can earn valuable reward points through GO MAINE, a program sponsored by the Maine DOT that promotes ridesharing efforts of commuters throughout Maine.
GO MAINE Reward Points can be redeemed for valuable restaurant coupons, discounts from area retailers or tickets to local shows and attractions. GO MAINE community members also get informed about monthly contests and special events, including the WAY 2 GO MAINE Challenge.
For more information visit GO MAINE, connect on social, or download the app from Google Play or Apple App Store.
Buses: The greener way to go
Riding the bus also supports USM's Strategic Sustainability Plan, which calls for the University to be carbon neutral by the year 2040. To achieve this goal, the University aims to lower its transportation footprint by 20% by 2025.
By providing students with free access to the citylink and METRO Bus transit service, we're helping to limit the number of individual commuting miles that students would otherwise have to make, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions with every trip.
