17th Annual Old-Fashioned Outdoor Band Concert
On the green in front of Corthell Hall
Dr. Jackie Townsend continues the tradition of this old-fashioned New England treasure. Join the USM Concert Band and local communities on the green outside of Corthell Hall in Gorham for a Saturday afternoon delight. And there's a new element added to this - we'll be hosting several high school students on campus that day for our annual "Instrumental Boot Camp" - this is a day set aside for students to work with our artist faculty as they prepare to audition for the MMEA All-State Ensembles. These groups perform each May at the Maine Music Educators Association Conference in Orono, and are highly selective ensembles made up of students from all over the state!
Students who are on campus that day will be invited to not only stay to watch the USM Concert Band perform at 1 p.m, but also enjoy the BBQ lunch, AND even have the opportunity to play with the college band at the end of the concert!
Program to include:
- Carolyn Bremer - Impulse Engines
- Ralph Vaughan Williams - English Folk Song Suite
- Eric Whitacre - October
- Julie Giroux - Opa!
- John Mackey - This Cruel Moon
- Scott Joplin - Combination March
- Erika Svanoe - Steampunk Suite
- John Philip Sousa - El Capitan (featuring HS Instrumental Boot Camp participants!)
(inclement weather site: Brooks Student Center)
Concert is free: Enjoy some classic band music while partaking in a old fashioned American barbecue with burgers, hot dogs, potato salad and other classic fixings at old fashioned prices! Cash only, with individual food and beverage items ranging from $1 - $3.
