2014 Fall Season At a Glance

All events are open to the public and take place in the Corthell Concert Hall on the USM Gorham Campus, 37 College Avenue, Gorham, unless otherwise noted.


  • 240 Strings
    8 p.m., Friday, Sept. 19 
    The USM School of Music Faculty Concert Series presents Annie Antonacos, piano with Patrick Doane, violin, and Ben Noyes, cello. Three musicians who grew up and trained in Maine come together for their first collaboration in a program of masterwork piano trios.

  • Old-Fashioned Outdoor Band Concert   
    1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 27 
    On The Green in front of Corthell Hall, USM Gorham campus 
    A tradition for the USM community and Gorham neighbors, this 12th annual afternoon of concert band classics and barbecue lunch (available at old-fashioned prices!) is fun for the whole family! Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or picnic blankets. Barbecue begins at noon.

  • Laura Kargul Celebrates 25 Years at USM! 
    8 p.m., Friday, Oct.17
    The Faculty Concert Series presents Laura Kargul, piano, celebrating her 25 years at USM with a program of favorite works by Schubert and Brahms, concluding with the brilliant virtuoso masterpiece, Liszt’s great Sonata in B Minor.  As always, making comments from the stage, she also will share her unique insights into the music.

    Based on the play by Frank Wedekind
    Winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, “Spring Awakening” is a provocative journey through the turbulent exhilaration of the teen years. Set in repressive 19th-century Germany, where youth are kept ignorant about the hormone-infused transition from adolescence to adulthood, a group of teenagers confront their budding sexuality with scandalous consequences. Featuring an electrifying score by Duncan Sheik, this groundbreaking rock musical exudes passion, angst and rebellion.

  • USM Youth Ensembles Fall Instrumental Concert
    7 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 13 
    Merrill Auditorium, 20 Myrtle St., Portland
    This annual fall concert is a wonderful showcase of the talent and skill of southern Maine’s young musicians. The performance includes:
    - Portland Youth Symphony Orchestra; Robert Lehmann, conductor

    - Portland Youth Junior Orchestra; Ferdinand Liva, conductor

  • Not Your Grandpa's Jazz   
    8 p.m., Friday, Nov. 21 
    The USM School of Music Faculty Concert Series presents Micah Maurio, trumpet, and Barry Saunders, clarinet, with the Faculty Jazz Ensemble. Jazz is about liberation, progress and freedom. In honor of progress, this concert will feature a number of original works and fresh arrangements by the USM jazz faculty. Standards are part of our tradition, but this is not your grandpa's jazz!

  • USM Youth Ensembles Fall Choral Concert
    2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 22
    The Southern Maine Youth Chorale, conducted by Rebecca Green, is comprised of singers in grades seven-12; the Southern Maine Children's Choir, conducted by Paul McGovern, is comprised of singers in grades four and up. The groups rehearse at the USM School of Music throughout the fall and present a final concert to showcase their talent and musicianship.

  • 24th Annual Scholarship Gala: More Than A Little Night Music

    Abromson Community Education Center, USM Portland Campus 
    Enjoy an elegant evening in support of scholarships for USM School of Music students! The “More Than A Little Night Music” Scholarship Gala will feature an all-new format including gourmet food and wine pairings, dessert, an espresso and cappuccino bar, live auction, silent action, raffle and music all night long from our acclaimed music students.

    The USM Composers Ensemble will present a concert of original works under the direction of Daniel Sonenberg, USM associate professor of music and resident composer.
