John holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Northwestern University and a Master of Music degree from the University of Missouri at Kansas City Conservatory.  His studies on modern horn have been with James Funkhouser, Frank Brouk and Dale Clevenger of the Chicago Symphony, Nancy Cochran-Block, and Philip Farkas.  He has performed as a soloist and clinician throughout the Midwest, New England, in Austria and in the Republic of Panama.

In the fall of 1991, John completed a sabbatical leave from his university position to spend time studying the history and performance practices of the classical horn with Richard Seraphinoff at the Indiana University and with Douglas Hill at the University of Wisconsin.  John then performed on the classical, baroque and early valved horn as a member of the Handel & Haydn Society of Boston.  He has also performed with Boston Baroque, Mercury of Houston, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra of San Francisco, Apollo’s Fire of Cleveland, Sante Fe Pro Musica, the Washington Bach Consort, the Aulos Ensemble, the American Classical Orchestra of New York, and the American Bach Soloists.  John’s favorite venture was with the early valved horn quartet, Universal Pistons.

Prior to coming to Maine, John Boden was Principal horn of the Omaha Symphony and a member of the Midlands Woodwind Quintet.  During the 1995-96 season, John took a year leave of absence from USM and the PSO and served as Principal horn of the Utah Symphony under the direction of Joseph Silverstein.  While in Utah, John taught horn at Weber State University in Ogden, UT and performed in the L. A. East Recording Studios.

The John and Dawn currently live in Liberty, Maine.
