Jazz Studies:

At the University of Southern Maine School of Music, our approach to jazz education encourages the student to combine a thorough knowledge of the jazz idiom with a solid background in traditional musical studies.  Jazz students will greatly benefit from their exposure to our many fine jazz groups including the Jazz Ensemble, the Vocal Jazz Ensemble and numerous instrumental and vocal jazz combos.  The USM Jazz Ensemble is the flagship instrumental ensemble within the jazz idiom.  This big band focuses on performing important works from bands such as the Count Basie Orchestra, the Duke Ellington Orchestra, the Woody Herman Orchestra and the Bill Holman Orchestra just to name a few, as well as more contemporary works from writers and bands that are currently influencing the big band tradition.  The majority of students within the jazz studies program at USM, maintain active careers as freelance musicians in the Southern Maine area and enjoy performing in many of the musical venues that Portland's metropolitan area has to offer.  History has often shown that a jazz musician with this diversity of training and varied artistic experience, will find greater opportunities for professional musical employment upon graduation
